Cancun Flats Fishing

Cancun fly fishing with Aquarius Fishing

Fly fishing or spin fishing the Isla Blana Flats

Very few anglers know that only 25 miles north of the world famous resort town of Cancun, exists one of the best flats fishing spots in the world for Super Grand Slams (tarpon, permit, snook and bonefish). This great place is known as the Isla Blanca Lagoon.

The Isla Blanca Lagoon is a maze of 12 square miles of mangrove shallow flats, sandy flats, grassy flats, mud flats, coves, inlets, grassy holes, shallow and open waters. The lagoon is teeming with hungry schooling baby tarpon, permit, snook and bonefish, along with plenty of speckled trout, lady fish, snapper, jack, barracuda, small shark, etc.

The fishing area is quite diverse and the anglers have a very good chance of getting a "Super Grand Slam" (tarpon, snook, permit and bonefish) or a "Grand Slam" (3 out of these 4 fish species) in a single fishing day. This is the fisherman’s delight for both the fly fishing and the conventional angler.

Fishing Information

Experienced anglers consider the flats of Isla Blanca in Cancun, one of the best fishing places in the world for super grand slams (tarpon, permit, snook and bonefish).  This area of Cancun produces fish all year, but during the winter months (Dec. - Feb.), due to the cold fronts, the lagoons and flats tend to get a little too cold for the permit and bonefish. Therefore, they leave the flats sparse. All other fish species are present throughout the year. The best months for fishing the four main fish species; tarpon, permit, snook and bonefish, are March through November.

We operate four 18’ flats fishing boats powered with 40 H.P. Yamaha motors with the latest safety equipment. The fishing is done from the boat, so there is no need to bring your wading shoes. We recommend that you bring a pair of comfortable soft shoes such as top siders, tennis shoes or strapped sandals. You must also bring a pair of good polarized sun glasses for fishing, a convenient hat, plenty of sun block lotion (SPF 50), bug spray, comfortable light clothing and please, don't forget your camera.
